Community

We long for community. A sense of belonging. Knowing our neighbors, with shared goals, resources, and positive outcomes.

Community can take many organic forms: a neighborhood, a social or work environment, club membership, activism, sport, school. There are intentional communities, too – co-created, with common goals and often a natural way of living. Cooperative models of living are trending, whether for a small group of friends in their senior years, young people sharing a flat, or a village of tiny homes.

The Healthy Community:

  • Inclusive participation, decision-making, open dialogue
  • Diversity: age, gender, ethnicity, culture, skillsets, mindsets
  • Social cohesion: shared resources and events, safety and trust
  • Clean, green, natural environment
  • Co-constructed vision, clear goals, flexibility and adaptability

Essential Skills:

  • Foundational: authenticity, empathy and compassion, communication, collaboration
  • Interpersonal: active listening, conflict resolution, respect for boundaries
  • Intrapersonal: self-awareness, problem-solving, flexibility and adaptability
  • Management: outreach and onboarding, process facilitation, event planning, advocacy
  • Strategic: vision crafting, goal setting and measurement, creating rituals and traditions

Nuanced Skills:

  • Cultural sensing, Storytelling, Network weaving
  • Feedback loops, Resource mobilization
  • Succession planning and legacy

Whether a community is in the planning stage and seeking to integrate healthy principles, more mature and experiencing stagnation, conflict, or decline, or facing a loss of its founders with a need for viable succession or closure and legacy, consultation with a community-oriented psychologist may help.

The Psychologist’s Advanced Skills:

  • Diagnosing group stages and offering insight
  • Identifying systemic issues such as groupthink, biases, scapegoating, social loafing, or spiritual bypassing
  • Understanding roles and enhancing healthy interactions
  • Facilitating difficult conversations
  • Providing trauma-informed practices
  • Leveraging intrinsic motivation and fostering a growth mindset
  • Building psychological safety: enhancing trust, managing crises, preventing burnout

The community or cultural health psychologist has a focus on the intersections of psychology, health, and behavior, and can play a crucial role in the building or sustaining of a healthy community. This may include the identification and treatment of illnesses that can interfere with or even destabilize a community, such as addiction or personality disorders; preventive measures can also be introduced, as the focus of a health psychologist is one of wellbeing or optimal health.

Contributions include:

  • Promotion of healthy behaviors: nutrition, exercise, meditation, stress management
  • Support of mental health: education and intervention on a wide range of topics, coping techniques, increased resilience
  • Enhancement of social cohesion: workshops to build trust, empathy, and cooperation;  collective action for a healthier environment; conflict resolution and mediation
